sed question

Hello Folks,

Can someone explain what does the following command mean.
Code:
sed 'y/^biecn/CFKZNT/' $1

the middle part will replace biecn with FKZNT and stores the values in 1st.

any ideas?

This is basically a transform command where all 'b' transforms to 'C', 'i' to 'F','e' to 'K' etc.. $1 is the input file where all these changes takes place. For letter 'b' alone to change to 'C' it should be the starting letter of the line..(^ indicates first position of a line)

Thanks for you reply.

If i run the above script on the file.txt
Code:
cat file.txt
beware it's still relatively early in the smartphone game, and it's still an open question how low the price will go.

Output i get is
Code:
FZwarZ Kt's stKll rZlatKvZly Zarly KT thZ smartphoTZ gamZ, aTd Kt's stKll aT opZT quZstKoT how low thZ prKNZ wKll go.

It is transforming 'b' into 'F' and 'i' into 'K' and so on. I think 'y/^ has some different meanings.

gotcha..seems ^ has no special meaning here. ^ is replaced by 'C' hence 'b' by F, 'i' by 'K' etc..

yes, it make sense.

but what does 'y means?

---------- Post updated at 11:32 PM ---------- Previous update was at 11:27 PM ----------
Code:
cat script
sed 'y/^biecn/CFKZNT/' $1

./script file.txt

what would be the meaning of $1 in this case?

y - is the syntax for sed to make those replacements happen. $1=file.txt, so literally it means
Code:
sed 'y/^biecn/CFKZNT/' file.txt
