Invoker of script

Gurus

2 scripts

script_a.ksh:

Code:
#!/bin/ksh
./script_b.ksh

script_b.ksh
Code:
#!/bin/ksh
echo "Invoker\'s name is: "

How could script_b get its invoker script name?
Any variable pre-defined?

Thanks

Some shells have an automatic environment variable called PPID which is the parent PID. By using ps you could get the command, eg
Code:
ps -ocmd= -p $PPID

There are several possibilities:

1) transfer the name of the calling process via a commandline argument:

script_a.ksh:
Code:
#!/bin/ksh
./script_b.ksh $0

exit 0

script_b.ksh:
Code:
#!/bin/ksh
print - "i was called by: $1"

exit 0

2) find it out via your own PID and PPID:

"$$" is a variable maintained by the shell containing your own process ID, $PPID contains the parent processes PID. Searching in the process list for the latter and filtering out all the processes started by the former leaves only the parent process:

script_a.ksh:
Code:
#!/bin/ksh
./script_b.ksh

exit 0

script_b.ksh:
Code:
#!/bin/ksh

ps -fe | grep $PPID | grep -v $$

exit 0

I hope this helps.
