I was referring to the =~ operator which allows ERE and can only be used inside [[ ]] as part of a conditional expression and not inside [ ] (see man ksh). What exactly do you disagree with?

I tried some tests bash/ksh

Code:
# cat testfile
isthereany
isthereanything "this is line"
isthereANYanything "this is line ?? "
isthereanyyything "this is line ?? "
isanythereanything "this is line ?? "
isanythereanything "this is line ?? "

Code:
#!/bin/bash
while read -r l
  do
   [[ "$l" =~ "isthere(.*)anything" ]] &&   printf "%s\n" "BASH REMACTH -> ${BASH_REMATCH}" || echo "nomatch!! "
  done <testfile

Code:
# ./test
nomatch!!
BASH REMACTH -> isthereanything
BASH REMACTH -> isthereANYanything
nomatch!!
nomatch!!
nomatch!!

But i m not sure is working success all ksh93 distributons Smilie

Code:
#!/bin/ksh93

while read -r l
  do
   [[ "$l" =~ "isthere(.*)anything" ]] &&   printf "%s\n" "REMACTH OK " || echo "nomatch!! "
  done <testfile

Code:
ksh93 1.1-4
version sh (AT&T Labs Research) 1999-09-28

Code:
$ ./test
nomatch!!
nomatch!!
nomatch!!
nomatch!!
nomatch!!
nomatch!!

You should not use double quotes around isthere(.*)anything as was mentioned earlier in this thread.
Code:
[[ "$1" =~ isthere(.*)anything ]]

and no need for the parentheses:
Code:
[[ "$1" =~ isthere.*anything ]]

and you do not need double quotes on the left either:
Code:
[[ $1 =~ isthere.*anything ]]

hmm in that case, double quotes and single quotes are same effect in this scenario
Code:
[[ "$l" =~ "isthere(.*)anything" ]]

Code:
[[ $l =~ 'isthere(.*)anything' ]]

I accorging to me this usage is more usefull like formationfull Smilie
I like quotes Smilie
Code:
[[ "$l" =~ "isthere".*"anything" ]]

I don't understand what you mean. As I said in #24 you should not use double quotes (or single quotes for that matter).

I mean double quotes (or single quotes ) are useable except only extended regular expression
Code:
#!/bin/ksh
while read -r l
  do
   [[ "$l" =~ "isthere".*"anything" ]] &&   printf "%s\n" "REMATCH OK " || echo "nomatch!! "
  done <testfile
nomatch!!
REMATCH OK
REMATCH OK
nomatch!!
nomatch!!
nomatch!!

is the same
Code:
#!/bin/ksh
while read -r l
  do
   [[ $l =~ isthere.*anything ]] &&   printf "%s\n" "REMATCH OK " || echo "nomatch!! "
  done <testfile
nomatch!!
REMATCH OK
REMATCH OK
nomatch!!
nomatch!!
nomatch!!

In post #25, the first two examples are wrong. In the third example the use of double quotes serves no purpose IMO, put you can use them there, as long as they are not around the part that should not be interpreted as a string.
