So I should still use -eq for numeric comparison wherea == for string then??

use [[ ]] instead of []
use -eq for numeric tests with [[ ]]
and = or == for string tests with [[ ]]
use == for numeric equality tests with (( ))

Also you can use [ ] for POSIX compliance and then you use = for string and -eq for numbers.

What is the virtue of [[]] to justify the additional typing?

I had a problem that having f="npt06-sr40-syn-dc0p02-32x24drw.mis", the drw tag was detected, however it was going through the else statement.

I was getting an error ../Scripts/ksh/plot-misfit.ksh[242]: [: argument expected

It is less picky on quoting and spacing, no field splitting and file name generation are performed, there are extra unary and binary expressions, it enables both pattern matching and ERE (regex) matching, plus it is faster.

I am lukewarm about overloading = and == for patterns:
Code:
 
           string = pattern    True if string matches pattern.
           string != pattern   True if string does not match pattern.

Korn says double quoting turns off pattern recog., same as on the command line. How does one do regex?
