Code:
col=one,two,three
if["head -1 testFile.csv" == "$col"]

i am getting error 'then' is not expected

spaces. You need spaces
Code:
if [ (your test goes here) ]
then

else

fi

spaces on all sides of the brackets

thanks for the response

so it works without error but it is not interupting correctly
Code:
col=one,to,three
if [ "head -1 testFile.csv" == "$col" ]
then
echo "equal"
else
echo "not equal"
fi

if testFile.csv contains
one,to,three
apple
orange

it outputs
not equal...

"head -1 testFile.csv" isn't taken as a command, instead it tries to match this with $col since it is within quotes.

replace quotes with ` [the character which comes when tilde key is pressed ] and things will work fine...

Cheers

got it so for values in unix to be interpolated then need the ` charactor.

so `head -1 testFile.csv` == `$col`

translates the head command to its output and the $col to "one,to,three"

thanks i will try it Smilie

Its more like:
Code:
if [  "$(head -1 testFile.csv)" == "$col"  ]

And by the way:

Just nitpicking here, but POSIX specifies a single = :
Code:
if [ "$(head -1 testFile.csv)" = "$col" ]
