Your script is missing the top line. Is it this? #!/bin/bash
Or another shell?
Or are you sourcing it with dot? . script

Also, on closer inspection, this line has some curiosities:
Code:
print P$i `nawk 'END {print NR}' $1 ` >> ${OutputPath}result.txt &

What print command are you using? Bash has a builtin printf and echo, but not print.

Why are you ending the line with an ampersand, &? Don't you want the line to complete it's output before moving on to the next file?

It might be helpful to add a temporary debug line at the top of the while loop. Maybe this:
Code:
echo "DEBUG: $i, $1"

thanks for reply.

1. i am using #!/bin/ksh
2. actually i have 7 sets of files like CAT1 CAT2 ...CAT7.so i used ampersand so that when i give one set to count records it should go in the background and second set should be given and so on.all 7 sets of file should work in parallel.
3. when i give
Code:
CountRecords "$CAT1" "$CAT2" ...."$CAT7"

every thing works fine.but because i have to use this set of files at many places for many functions. i want i should have a variable like CAT="$CAT1 $CAT2 ...$CAT7". and when i give it to the function it should give the result like above command.
Code:
CountRecords "$CAT"

4.sorry i send the other print command the exact code is

Code:
#!/bin/ksh
#----------------------------------------
#Full Paths of Directories
ScriptPath=/export/home/atheerbi/
InputFile=/u02/atheerbi/SPOOL/IN/VOICE/test/CAT/
OutputPath=/u03/shahidoutput/
BackupPath=/u03/shahidoutput/
#----------------------------------------
# Names of 7 Sets of Input files
CAT1="${InputFile}CAT_*0[0|1|2|3]?????"
CAT2="${InputFile}CAT_*0[4|5|6|7]?????"
CAT3="${InputFile}CAT_*0[8|9]?????"
CAT4="${InputFile}CAT_*1[0|1|2|3]?????"
CAT5="${InputFile}CAT_*1[4|5|6|7]?????"
CAT6="${InputFile}CAT_*1[8|9]?????"
CAT7="${InputFile}CAT_*2[0|1|2|3]?????"

CountRecords(){
	while [[ $# -ne 0 ]]; do
	print $(date) P$i `wc -l $1|tail -1|nawk '{print $1}'` >> ${OutputPath}result.txt &
		i=i+1
		shift
done
}

# CountRecords "$CAT1" "$CAT2" #works fine but i want
CAT="$CAT1 $CAT2"
CountRecords $CAT #and it should give the same result
