how to Read a file and assigning each line to a variable?

Friends,

I have a file output.txt with values as below:
Code:
092307135717
061910135717

I want to know how to read this file and then assign each value to a variable.
say like
Code:
var1=092307135717
var2=061910135717

So that I can use this VAR1 and Var2 in the shell script for further processing.

I tried this but not working:
Code:
while read v1 v2
do
var1=`echo "$v1"`
var2=`echo "$v2"`
done < output.txt

echo $var1
echo $var2

the output is 061910135717

only the second value is getting printed irrespective of whatever the
values I am echoing,ie., var1 or var 2

NOte :I am using the KSH

Please help me friends,thanks.

Why cant you just use

Code:
awk '{print "var"NR"="$1}' output.txt

Using that awk:

Code:
$ eval $(awk '{print "var"NR"="$1}' output.txt)

$ echo $var1
092307135717

$ echo $var2
061910135717

Thank you friends,I changed and used like this
Code:
v1=`echo $var | awk '{print $1}'`
v2=`echo $var | awk '{print $2}'`

where var is the variable which contains the values.
