Question AWK with inconsistent field layout

Input File:
Code:
1234567890123456789012345678901234
----------------------------------
11111 XXX xxxxx 6666666666
22222 YYY 2222222222
33333 AAA TTT xxxxx 9999999999
44444
55555 RRR UUU 5555555555
66666 TTT nnnnn 2222222222
77777 XXX RRR 0000000000
88888 444 %%% 7777777777

Expected output:
Code:
12345678901234567
-----------------
11111 6666666666
22222 2222222222
33333 9999999999
44444
55555 5555555555
66666 2222222222
77777 0000000000
88888 7777777777

What is the best way to eliminate fields in between columns 1 & 5 and bring them together. I am assuming AWK can do this somehow. I keep getting confused with the potential missing fields 2 thru 4. The file is fixed length though, so Field 5 always starts at byte 25. Is byte substitution possible? I am over-thinking it.

This won't work for:
Code:
11111 XXX xxxxx 6666666666
22222 YYY 2222222222

88888 444 %%% 7777777777
99999 TTT nnnnn

assuming the fixed width format as shown above:
Code:
nawk ' { print $1, (length>25)?$NF:""} ' myFile
