help required for below code

hi

Code:
file=$(ls -tr GMG_*.txt | tail -1)
var_date="20091030"
v_rdate=="20091030"
var_text=$(expr substr $file 1 10)
var_newfile=$var_text.txt

in the above code i have 2 variables .v_rdate value is constant where as var_date value is fethced from file names(only date part) which can be different for different files.
i want to check if the values of v_rdate & var_date are equal,if they are equal i have to copy (cp $file $var_text.txt).but this copying should happen only for files whose date(var_date) is equal to v_rdate.

can some one help on this?

thanks in advance.

Post withdrawn. Basic requirement is fairly simple but format of the filenames is unknown. Where in the filename is the date yyyymmdd ? It is definitely not characters 1-10 because the script states that the filenames start with "GMG_" .

Btw. This line should be:

v_rdate="20091030"

And this line should be:

var_newfile=${var_text}.txt
