Question Need help shell script
I have a requirement to write a shell script for the following purpose...

The situation is :

There is an Error file which keeps growing. When this shell script executes it should run until the error code appears 10 times.
When the Error code appears in the file for the 11th time, a mail needs to be sent to someone using mailx.

Note that the Error Code might have already appeared many times earlier before the script is run.

One method to do this is to "grep" the error from the file in question, then count the number of lines by piping results into "wc -l". Place within a short condition statement to effect of "if wc -l greater than 10 mail root". Not efficient but if the error is unique within this file it should work as required.

Can you elaborate on the error condition, the file that is generated? Also, what shell and system are you using?

The error is a code like eg -911. This error will have appeared in the file earlier too. But after I START RUNNING the script, the 11th time it appears should send an email.

The shell is ksh and system is solaris

What's the format of the error file? Does a time stamp display on the line with each error too? Post a few complete lines from the error file.

Also, nitrile, you can just use the -c option in grep to count the number of matched lines. No need to pipe output. Smilie
