help with script

The following script allows one to type the command "./getama", which searches a logfile for text "REPT:AMATAPE SESSION", writes it to a file, then emails that file. I would like to modify it to where instead of typing "./getama" for today's date, you could type "./getama [any date]". Thanks.

HOME=/home/ao1dpenn
DATE=`date +%y%m%d`
FILE="${HOME}/ama.$DATE}"
ROP="/omp/omp-data/logs/rm/"
ROPFILE="${ROP}${DATE}.APX"
OF=$HOME/temp
echo "OUTPUT NOW BEING PRINTED\n"
/omp/bin/cgrep -R 'REPT;AMATAPE SESSION' ${ROPFILE} > ${FILE}
echo "OUTPUT NOW BEING WRITTEN TO ${FILE}\n"
cat ${FILE} | mail someone@somewhere.com
rm ${FILE}

If I understand what you want, try changing the DATE line to be:
DATE=$1

You also might want to add a test at the top
of the scripot to ensure that a command line
argument is passed.

Something like the following (untested) code
fragment:

if [ $# -lt 1 ]; then
echo "ERROR: No date entered!"
exit 1
fi

I would also add an explicit shell declaration
to the top of your script to ensure that the
script is run in the correct shell ie.

#!/usr/bin/sh

Replace "sh" with your specific shell if necessary.

What I am wanting to do is type, for example, "./getama 031225", which would search the ropfile for 12/25/03 and email the textfile with the appropriate text.
