Expect script help

Using expect script how can i change the date (exec date) to following format mm_dd_yy ?
In ksh i can use somthing of the nature DATE=`date '+%m_%d_%y'`

Actually what i am looking for it to set a variable DATE to mm_dd_yy using exec---------set DATE [exec date '+%m_%d_%y']
does not work.

Code:
% expect -c 'set DATE [exec date +%m_%d_%y];puts "$DATE"'
09_16_09
% expect -c 'set DATE [clock format [clock seconds] -format %m_%d_%y];puts "$DATE"'
09_16_09

Code:
bad flag "-c": must be -glob, -regexp, -exact, -notransfer, -nocase, -i, -indices, -iread, -timestamp, -timeout, -nobrace, or --
    while executing
"expect -c 'set DATE [exec date +%m_%d_%y]"

That was an example, you should use the following code in your script:

Code:
set DATE [exec date +%m_%d_%y]

I had tried this earlier and got the following error:

date: bad conversion
while executing
"exec date '+%m_%d_%y'"
invoked from within
"set DATE [exec date '+%m_%d_%y']"
(file "./abcd.sh" line 4)
