Following error is coming...

awk: syntax error near line 1
awk: bailing out near line 1

Try with nawk instead of awk.

Another way using sed :
sed '/^$/q' inputfile

# 10

sed code is working fine but, It is not deleting the empty record which is next to last main record.

Old 07-31-2009
sed -n '/^$/q;p' inputfile

# 12  
Old 07-31-2009
awk ' NF {print} !NF {exit}' inputfile

# 13  
Old 07-31-2009
