Perl is one of the "standard" ways of scripting in Unix/Linux systems. It is included in the default installation of most of the popular *nixes. And needless to say, it is widely used by sysadmins, CGI web developers and finance and bioinformatics professionals.

It's perfectly fine if you have some beef with it. But not considering it standard is like closing your eyes to the facts.
