excluding root directory when searching

I'm writing a script that executes over several subdirectories that looks like this:

Code:
cd companies
#find . -print -type d |
find . -type d -print |
while read dirname
do
  cd $dirname
  # run your code at this point
  if [ -f "changes.txt" ]; then
     #do somthing
  else
      #do something else
  fi
  cd -
done

Right now this code executes in the root directory companies in addition to all the subdirectories, when I only want it to execute in the subdirectories. What changes do I need to make for this to happen?

Code:
find ./* -type d -print |

or eithout having to do a cd companies

Code:
find companies/* -type d -print
