Data What to use : awk or sed

Hi All,
I am a bit confused,Can anyone help;
My problem is that i have a flat file in this format

Code:

8.10 USAccountSummaryClone1
3.10 USAccountSummaryClone2
2.80 GlobalUserManagementClone1
2.10 BasicServicesClone2
1.60 MYCAServicesClone2
1.30 INTLEStatementClone1
0.90 BasicServicesClone1
0.50 EnterpriseServicesClone1
0.50 MYCAServicesClone1
0.10 GlobalMRClone1
0.10 EnterpriseServicesClone2
0.10 TransferClone1
0.10 OnlineDisputesClone1
0.00 USEStatementClone1
0.00 DocGenClone1
0.00 USEStatementClone2

Now i have to format it to this format

Code:

CPU_UTIL|USAccountSummaryClone1|8.10
CPU_UTIL|USAccountSummaryClone2|3.10
CPU_UTIL|GlobalUserManagementClone1|2.80
CPU_UTIL|BasicServicesClone2|2.10
CPU_UTIL|INTLEStatementClone1|1.60
* * * * * *
and so on........

How to add a particular word CPU_UTIL| in fron of each line and also in the output file the original file's first and second columns are reversed seperated by a pipe.

How can it be done using sed or awk??Smilie

Hi invinzin,
Thanks for your reply.
But i am getting this when i am executing the above command:

Code:
spdwa013 $ awk '{sub(/^/, "cputil | ");print}' /tmp/new_output
awk: syntax error near line 1
awk: illegal statement near line 1

Also i want to format the two columns of my original input file to het reversed with a pipe in between.

like this:

Code:
CPU_UTIL|USAccountSummaryClone1|8.10
CPU_UTIL|USAccountSummaryClone2|3.10
CPU_UTIL|GlobalUserManagementClone1|2.80
CPU_UTIL|BasicServicesClone2|2.10
CPU_UTIL|INTLEStatementClone1|1.60

Hey,Thanks all for your replies:

Hi anchal,

The code which you have pasted is giving error like this:
Code:
awk 'BEGIN{ OFS = "|" }{$3=$1;$2;$1="CPU_UTIL";print}' /tmp/new_output
awk: illegal statement 777300
 record number 1

Can you tell what is the problem??

Franklin, your solution works.!!
Thanks guys..

hello usha,

solution given by franklin, is best.

But keep a point to know if the example you have presented above is the same then it will work fine.

But , if there is any spaces inbetween then you will not get the desired result.
for eg if " MYCAServicesClone2 " is " MYCA ServicesClone2 " then it will not give the desired output.
