The ftp protocol has very few commands (see "man ftpd") and does not support unix shell commands such as "if". There is some variety of ftp commands across platforms. Though there are techniques to achieve the objective, it is not easy. Other correspondents are trying to steer you towards an easier method but will need to know about the environment.

What Operating System is on your server and the remote server?
What shell is available on your server and (if known) the remote server?

Are you an administrator on both servers?

Are the two servers on the same LAN or a secure private WAN, or is the Internet involved?

What does the output from a ftp "DIR" command of the remote directory look like?
Is the date part of the filename?

Are you allowed to rename or move files on the remote server?
Are you able to create directories on the remote server?
Are you allowed to run shell scripts on the remote server?

Do the files arrive on the remote server at predictable times. i.e Does the remote directory stay the same while you are transferring files?

thanks methyl I got that if then else doesn't work ...and i solved it in a different way but stuck with date.
