you could just do a

Code:
record=`grep -in "$name" phone | grep -i "^$number"`

thankyou so much, it works!!

Second Question: Instead of displaying the record, what would i need to do to remove the name and their address?

echo "Please enter the name to remove"
read name

#The following will display the name
grep -in $name phonebook

echo "Please enter the record to remove
read number

#The following will assign the sed to name and then remove the selected record
record=`sed -n ${number}p $phonebook
grep -v "$record" $phonebook > $tmp
mv $tmp $phonebook

echo "The record is now removed!"

I'm getting this error:
grep: RE error 41: No remembered search string
mv: Insufficient arguments (0)
Usage: mv [-f] [-i] f1 f2
mv [-f] [-i] f1 ... fn d1
mv [-f] [-i] d1 d2

to delete the record

Code:
sed "/$record/d" $phonebook > $tmp
