You are using a shell that hasn't implemented the latest revision to the POSIX standard. It will work with any version of bash (at least since 2.05).

This will work in any POSIX shell:

Code:
xargs egrep  -f users.dat /dev/null < passwdfile |
 while IFS=: read line
 do
   file=${line%%:*}
   line=${line#*:}
   printf "%s|%s\n" "$line" "$file"
 done

Thanks cfajohnson.
But still the same problem.We are using ksh.
Can we implement this using awk

EDIT: It is possible that some versions of ksh will require IFS to be null for it to work; I have changed it in the above code.

pass the output of ur original script in the following awk using a pipe

awk '$0 ~ /::/{str=str " " $0;next}{key=$0;a=split(str,srr," ");if(a>=1){for (i in srr)printf("%s|%s\n",srr[i],key);str="";next}}'

eg, originalscript | the awk script above( or implement it somewhere)
