Shell Programming and Scripting

Hello.. I'm hoping that someone here can help me out.. I'm brand new at this. I don't understand any of this yet.. but I want to.
How do I get one (shell), or how do I know what mine is?

Do you already have access to a system? If not that would be your first step. Check with the admin as to the preferred login method. I won't go into all the methods of how to login or what programs to use. Your admin can tell you that.

Once you are logged in, type this and hit enter or return:

echo $SHELL

You will most likely get one of the following if you are a new user:

sh - This is the borne shell
csh - this is the c shell
ksh - this is the korn shell
bash - this is the borne again shell

Those are the most common shells, if you get something else, just post back and someone will tell you what it is. I hope this is what you were looking for.
