What is the "NAME" environment variable used for ?

Hi all,

I am running Solaris and I just find there is an environment variable called "NAME" set in my .profile. I googled it for a while and still don't know what is this variable used for (I think it is different as USERNAME or USER?)?

When I used mailx to send emails to my PC (thought exchange server), I find that the display name for the from address is set by this NAME variable. But I did not find the document for it. So what is this NAME varibale used for (except for the case I mention here)?

Thanks!

It may not be a system variable and could be something set/used by the server admin. I couldn't find any mention of NAME in sh/csh/ksh manpages.

Well, I missed out the above! If it is set in .profile, then its obviously something set by whoever has configured .profile for you (and maybe for other users). I'm definitely right Smilie
