Sftp command not working

the lsmsadit id is setup as an sftp id only. I can't login with it directly. Would that make a diff where he has to set it as root?

SSH, SCP and SFTP are all part of the same suite. Your admin would have had to go out of his way to disable one of these programs.

I don't see how it could work at all logging in with a regular user if the authorized_keys file is owned by root, without having to give the password, that is.

WOW. Here is what made the scp work !! He changed it first to be owned by root and that did not work like expected it not to work. Then he changed the access to read only as follows and it worked:

-r--r--r-- 1 lsmsadit appadmin 607 Jan 14 11:11 authorized_keys


That is very odd that i can scp now becuase of the access. before it was rw-r--r-- !!!!

That is odd. There's no reason why changing it from -rw-r--r-- to -r--r--r-- should make any difference.

Ideally authorized_keys should be either -rw------- (600) or -r-------- (400), and the .ssh directory it's in should be drwx------ (700) or dr-x------ (500), and the home directory should not be writable by group or other.
