Hi, Just an update: I decided to go with the default permissions that came with the box. They are indeed better compared to the changes I was thinking about. There seem to be more than one reason why the permissions were so different compared to RHEL (It was keeping in mind some customized applications that ran on Solaris).

If you want to harden RHEL6, reducing the number of unconfined processes and users using SELinux is one way to go. See Security-Enhanced Linux
