Take a look at the IEEE double precision
representation...

http://www.math.grin.edu/~stone/cour...EEE-reals.html

The greatest number that has an exact IEEE single-precision representation is
340282346638528859811704183484516925440.0 (2^128 - 2^104)

The greatest real number that can be represented
exactly as a double-precision real
is 2^1024 - 2^971, and
the least positive real that can be so
represented is 2^-1074
