How to get UNIX and C Compiler

Hi,

I have to do a project in UNIX OS using a C/C++ compiler. I'm familiar with C/C++, but only in Windows. I wanted to know:
1. Where can I download a UNIX OS? (I already have a Windows XP on and I don't want to loose it)
2. Where can I download a C/C++ compiler for the UNIX OS?
3. Any tips or hints you think I need to know? (since it's my first time using UNIX OS and programming with its C/C++ compiler).

I would really appreciate any help. I'm totally blank about UNIX.
