Why did you close all my threads? I undstand that since you may be an advanced unix user, that my questions seem dumb. Hey, they probably are. But the title of the forum is " UNIX for Dummies Questions & Answers" and it says "All UNIX Newbies Welcome !!"

So what is the prob?

I dont think my thread about which unix is most popular in businesses and for what business application was broad at all BTW.

Lanstarr, they are very broad questions. Look at my response to your one post. It'd be like me asking what the newest song is cause I wanna have the newest one.. or like asking what the best party music is. You're gonna tell me one thing.. my friend's gonna tell me something else.. my dad's gonna tell me something completely different than both! Smilie

It actually just comes down to different sites' policies. Here, the policy is to not ask questions that are broad and will elicit "well i think blah blah blah is better than what you said because..." type posts. They lead to flaming and arguing and generally aren't very productive. You should be able to find review sites devoted to comparing/contrasting different unix flavors.

We have some rules here and you are violating them. Yes, we cut newbies some slack, but you can't hide behind the shield of ignorance forever.

Please read the rules. By violating rule 8, you trigger rule 12. You didn't know you were violating rule 8? Fair enough. But you know it now. See, you're learning already. Smilie

Browse through our forum and take a look at the kinds of questions that we address here. Some of our questioners ask questions that display very high levels of ignorance. And they generally are answered with a lot of patience (thanks to rules 1 and 2).

But this does not mean that all ignorant questions are welcomed here. This is very specialized forum. We can handle some kinds of questions very well. But other kinds of questions simply have no place here at all. Thanks for your understanding.

You are welcome to read the rule and to abide by them.

Everyone is welcome who reads the rules and tries to abide by them. The rules are not designed to be difficult, they are in place in the interest of the entire community and they have served the community well.

No one is welcome to welcome to break forum break rules.

BTW, the moderators (and posters) are unpaid volunteers. They do a great job. Please make their job more easy, not more difficult. Thanks! Neo

Lanstarr, we are happy with you here. But you need to brush up on forum etiquette.

First and foremost you need to read previous posts, a little lingering before posting. The search forum is also valuable.

Secondly you need to go some groundwork, nee google. google will provide you a vast manjority of answers to questions. Also in your case a little background information would have helped you to forsee that some of the questions you asked would create an endless discussion. Such as which Unix is newest/best. Something I noticed whilst in my lingering period was that this forum strives for objectivity in threads.

You also need to show some empathy for some of the long time posters at this site, you may have noticed as a regular on other forums perhaps that particular topics come up over and over again. When you have posts in the thousands at a forum this can become a little annoying, especailly when there is a search function.

So keep posting, just make sure that your questions are a little bit more tailored for reasonble responses. Keep to the rules and just be aware of the general feel of forums your are at.

Noone is mad at you, I understand how you feel - when I first started on some forums I felt moderators were shooting me down but in hindsight they weren't. I feel some of the tutorials I linked you to in another post will help you alot. Also read some of the posts about which books are good; there are several of these topics around.
With books, experimentation and of course RTFM you will get to a basic level of understanding really quickly.

Hmm, I've rambled on aimlessly.
