iPod nano (5th generation): Error message saying that iPod 'could not be identified properly'

An error message may appear when connecting an iPod nano (5th generation) to iTunes for Windows: "An iPod has been detected, but it could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the iPod, then try again." If your iPod doesn't appear in iTunes but you don't see this error message, refer to one of these two articles instead: The iPod appears as a storage device in Windows The iPod does not appear as a storage device in Windows
