Hi

I am planning to do my final year project on Linux and I have a time period of 8 months.

Do you have any ideas what I could do to learn linux system administrator as I am a beginner.

I would like the project to be on Centos / Debian , install a server and allow multiple users to log in remotely from Mac OS, Windows and Linux laptop to administrate the server.

Ok. You didn't mention if this "Final year project" is for a certain class, an entire Linux administration course, or a whole career.
Assuming either of the first 2 options that I just mentioned, I would do 3 things integrated into one:
1) Set up a samba share that can be accessed from Windows / Linux / Mac boxes. Add screen caps from each system showing how it works. Consider the possibility of adding network printers as well using samba or cups.
2) Using network devices (such as printers and other Linux boxes), set up a NMS (Network Management System, such as JFFNMS, Nagios, Icinga, Zabbix, etc) to monitor those network devices.
3) Set up a firewall / proxy / mail server using iptables / Squid / Postfix.

You need to give a little more info if you want a answer to your question. A few things to think about. 1st You will need to install a SSH client on your windows machine. What hardware are you using or will this be a VM and if so which VM software will you be using.

As for project ideas how you make a file server? This way you can share files from all the different operating systems you listed. This could also be useful to have after your project is over, if you have a lot of files such as movies and music.

Sorry for not giving more specification.

The scope of the project will be for me to build a good knowledge based in linux system administration and learn how to design a network.

For example

I have an organization based in four different countries.

USA - New York
Australia - Sydney
Europe - UK
Russia - Moscow

Each office has employees (let's say 20 or 30) and need to have account users, email boxes(mail server),sharing files (file server),print server etc.

Can access through VPN connection to the network if they are working from home or anywhere else.Users are free to use Mac OS/ Windows / Linux as OS on their pcs.

Not sure if that helped or is too much for an 8 month project.

If is too much I would like to do that as my home network so I will minimise it a lot.

I would like to learn and become linux administrator step by step after I graduate, so anything good I could start with to build a strong knowledge and base for the future will be appreciate

If you look at my first answer, that pretty much summarizes what you just said. If you dedicate about 5 hours a day for 8 months, excluding Sundays, you can easily finish your project within that time frame.

If you are going to have 4 different cites then you might want to setup a VPN between the 4 sites. You may also think about setting up a web portal so the users can access there mail and download documents. I would also standardize on one Linux distro. If your looking to build skills for a future job. Then I would use CentOS, but if you just want get the project done then I would use Ubuntu.
