Data Cannot start the X server Mandrake 10.1 Comm. Could not open default font 'fixed'

Hello, my linux box was working nicely untill one day at booting, I received the error message:"I cannot start the X server. It is likely that it is not set up correctly. Would you like to view the X server output to diagnose the problem?"

I saw the output (from: /var/log/Xorg.0.log) and noticed the most significant as:

Fatal server error:
'could not open default font 'fixed''.

---Does anyone know what dooes that mean?---

also I saw the following warnings (ww):

(ww) Option "XkbOptions" requires an string value
(ww) LoadModule: given non-canonical module name "/usr/X11R6/lib/modules

I tried to re-configure the monitor and video card with the XFdrake tool. And I see that all is correct: My monitor (Optiquest Q71) and graphics card (RIVA TNT2). But when re-testing, the X server cannot start:
The screen displays the Nvidia splash screen, then goes black, flickers several times, repeats the Nvidia splash etc. This is repeated three times, then again the error "I cannot start the X server" message apears. Smilie

I should mention that I've been using the Gnome Display Manager (GDM) to login. In days before, the GDM I chose was crashing and then an alternative GDM was displayed instead. So, anyway, I still could login using this GUI.

Do you think that GDM is causing this problem. How can I set it right again?

I am at total loss without the graphic interphase.

Thanks in advance.

If your / partition is full, XFS (X Font Server) will not be able to start. Use the df command to check how much free space is in your / partition.

Bug full /tmp partition disabled X server

Thanks echan, but I already figured it out. I have posted the solution in another thread:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=292160

in this thread, there is another solution for people who need to modify one of their FontPathss.

Thanks again.

You are welcome. Smilie
Next time you record TV, remember to put it in your home directory instead. Smilie
It might be a good idea to have a seperate partition for /home so if you filled that up, it won't affect the system.
