IP Networking

I have a new server... We were doing some testing on it over the local ethernet. All was well in the night when we turned off the machine. In the morning we were unable to get the server online. Have changed cables, NICs, looked over network settings... all to no avail.

I am running Redhat Linux 8 on the server. Any one has any suggestions?

Exactly how did you "turn it off"? What are the error messages you are getting?

I had halted the system by using the halt command. The system is a InfoLibria Series 20 system that I purchased off e-bay. It has 2 network cards, an Intel card (I don't know the specs) and an integrated network card (DEC... I think). Both the cards were detected in install (I did not note the type unfortunately). I have since replaced the cards and tried but to no avail. Both are 10/100 cards.

Like I said, it was working fine just the night before... am rather puzzled as to why it stopped working all of a sudden. Its rahter frustrating.

The following are the steps I had followed:
1. Removed the network card that was 'blown'
2. Inserted the new network card (a Linksys card)... the card was getting detected but I was not able to ping the box.
3. Later I removed the Linksyscard and replaced it with a 3Com (3c905B) card. The card was detected all right and the right module was loaded for it (3c90x.o). But I am still not able to get the server online.

I have tested the NICs on other machines (both Windows and Linux), and they are working just fine. I had installed Wondows NT4 on the server and was successful in getting it online. I am running out of ideas on what could be the reason for the failure with Linux.

When I put the server online with the same IP address as another system (Win98), I got a conflicting IP address message on the Win98 machine. Which led me to believe that it is not a hardware issue (?)

Can someone please suggest something for this?

are you using static IP address or are you using DHCP? the brand new card should work fine if its getting detected. maybe this is a configuration problem. maybe you just set your cards up with ifconfig but did not set up your system to restore those settings on the next boot, which is why you lost functionality. what is the output of the command ifconfig
