3600 C Class disk upgrade

Hi there

I have a 3600 C class PA-RISC workstation, and I am wondering if I can increase the disk capacity on it.

I have a couple of 73GB Seagate SCSI disks which I could fit in to the SCA slots, and if they are not suitable I am willing to find alternatives - but I am not sure how to go about formatting and preparing them.

I managed to do something similar with a Sun Ultra, by booting the OS in single user mode from a CD, then using the format utility - is it possible to do the same sort of thing with HP kit ? - or do I have to get a HP disc ?

Regards

Hi Freddo,

Your question isnt clear to me. Sorry, if you can give us more information like below, it would help us.

What is the HP-UX OS you are using?
Is the system up and running now?
Also, are you trying to change the root disk? Or, is that just going to be a data disk?
Is that disk going to be added internally or externally?
Are you planning to use LVM or VXVM for managing?

Finally, is the server hot swapable?

I searched for documents regarding c class 3600 workstation for specifications and dint find any. If you can give us these information, we can then give you procedures..

3600 C Class disk upgrade reply

Hi DustBunny

The system is running HP-UX 11.23 - and I have the original disk kit and I don't mind re-installing the OS - there's no data on it to worry about

The system can be started up with no trouble - I just don't leave it running all the time.

Yes - I want to change the root disk. There's 2 x 9GB disks in there and I would like to replace both of them.

The disks are internal on a SCA connector - and from the look of the easy access disk caddy, I think the disk is supposed to be hot swappable.

The system is a workstation, so I am not worried about hot swappable servers

It's a home / hobby system in the garage, so no need to worry about volume management or RAID

Hope this helps a bit ..

Freddy
=>Please make it clear whether both these disks are part of root VG (vg00).

CHECKING IF NEW DISKS ARE WORKING PROPERLY:
Insert the new disks into your system and do following steps:
1. insf -eC disk <-- install drivers
2. ioscan -fnC disk <-- check if new disks are CLAIMED
3. diskinfo /dev/rdsk/cxtydz <-- from ioscan o/p

Now, if the new disks are working fine, you have two options that will be simple to follow:

1. Boot from hpux 11.23 DVD/CD
2. Perform cold installation (fresh OS on fresh disks) on newer disks.

OR

1. Take ignite backup of present OS (ignite utility is free to download)
2. Restore this backup onto new disks

I consider the earlier option a better and easy one.
Hope this helps.
Please revert back in case of any issues.
