Creating filesystem of 2MB size

Hi all,

I would like to ask on how to create 2MB partition on a Compact Flash card. It supposed to be of FAT12 type, and the CF capacity is 4GB. I try to do the partitioning and specify the size as 2MB but the partition editor automatically resize it to 8MB. I know that this is possible and the resulting filesystem can be read by Linux because I have one copy of CF of different capacity in my hand. I used fdisk, cfdisk, and parted (which I thought should be out of consideration). Is there any other tools or option recommended?

Thanks.

FAT12 can only handle 32 MB. If you look at the Wikipedia article, you'll see that you need two partitions of 2 GB in FAT16, or one FAT32 partition.

Thanks for the info. But I'm a bit confused. Smilie I wanted to make the 1st 2MB partition. The rest will be ext2 or ext3 partition(s), which known to not have problem with large sizes. The only thing that is making trouble here is the 2MB FAT12 partition. I'm not formatting large partitions with FAT12 filesystem. Can I have any further hints on this?

Thanks in advance.

What "partition editor" are you using?

I used fdisk for linux. It's the closest one to getting the result, but somehow, the partition created can't be read by linux. Partitioning by block doesn't allow smaller than 8MB. But by sector, I can go through, but the result is non standard partition causing failure to read or write to the partition. Is there any issue on partitioning a Compact Flash card?
