What is the maximum number of hosts on a TCP/IP internet?

What an odd question. IPv4 uses 32 bit addresses. This results in 4,294,967,296 possible addresses, but some of these are broadcast , multicast, etc and cannot be assigned to a host. IPv6 uses 128 bit addresses. This results in 340,282,366,920,938,463,463,374,607,431,768,211,456 possible addresses, but again some of these are anycast, multicast, etc and cannot be assigned to a host.

With version 4, we are running out of addresses. But once version 6 is fully deployed, we should be ok for awhile. But if we run out again, we wouldn't just give up. We would simply develop IPv8 or whatever. For this reason, there is no maximum.

Yes, indeed an interesting (odd) question. A few years ago who would have thought IPv4 would be insufficient.

All I remember a few years ago was some basic command line apps to look for other machines on the internet. Now, with the advent of internet awareness/apps machines half way around the globe seem right next to each other.
