It comes handy keeping them synchron on cluster nodes for example. So that VG A has the same Major Numbers on node1 as on node2. Else the cluster might warn you.
There don't come other circumstances for assigning Major Numbers to my mind. zxmaus had something similar with his raw devices from Oracle in a former thread.
If it is just a single machine not in a cluster, I usually do not care of the Major Number at all.
