i have use only TURBO C for programming.i used to did only on windows OS. but now i am trying to program on Linux systems.so i heard about GNU C tools and compiler. i am a bit confused and i want to know a very simplified answer for it. can anybody help me. what a heck is this GNU......

Here is how I got where I am:
I tried untarring tomcat and at the end of the untar I get the following:
So I downloaded GNU tar and did a pkgadd -d, which installed the package.

Am new to Solaris OS and need to install the GNU cpp compiler. Followed the instructions from Sunfreeware for installing the gcc compiler and it looks as if it correctly installed but i cannot run it from the command window.

I have a weird problem.
When i run the below code in SunOS and Linux i get different outputs

$ cat tst.ksh
#!/bin/ksh
echo "Abc" > $LOG_FILE
echo "Ret - $?"
=====
In Solaris
$ ./tst.ksh
Abc
Ret - 0

ser reads the configuration data from /etc/sfw/ser/ser.cfg (or the file specified with -f on the command line). The file contains global
