You can use the ndd command on most interfaces - basically, you set which interface you want to use and then check if it is up or down - other parameters can be checked also. See the man page.
ndd -set /dev/hme instance 0 #change hme and 0 to your type of interface & #
ndd -get /dev/hme link_status
0 is down, 1 is up

I am using telnet instead of ssh because network/physical service is on maintenance mode. I can ping google and other internel machines.
