Where it the error coming from? It doesn't sound like it's coming from the operating system - it sounds more like it's an application or terminal emulator you're using to me...
When the server locks up, what is displayed on the system console?

       gnome-sound-properties - enable sound, and associate sounds with events

SYNOPSIS

       gnome-sound-properties [gnome-std-options]

DESCRIPTION

       The Sound preference tool enables you to control when the GNOME sound server starts. You can also specify which sounds to play when partic-

OPTIONS

       The following options are supported:
