both of those distributions should suggest disk partitioning, just go with what they suggest, using the whole disk. regarding whats better to learn with, well there are too many factors to consider. some people might have a different opinion on how you should learn how to use setup and install linux. some would say install and use gentoo, following their online instructions would teach you the most. but everyone has different needs, some people start out with one distro and end up trying them all before they findone they like, others, will stick with the one that they started with. if those are the only two you have and want a suggestion on which to use, id say try mandrake, it is newer than redhat 8, and does not ( AFAIK ) supply broken media packages.
--- this is regarding RedHats decision to supply its users with crippled RPMs for XMMS andother media programs. disableing MP3 support and support for other video formats. if you want a suggestion of an easy, quality distro other than thosetwo, i am a big advocate of suse. the latest version 8.2, regarding crippled packages, they dont hinder mp3 usage, but xine and mplayer are provided lacking certain support for some propriatary file formats, but there doing so is understandable. if you choose suse, do not install mplayer and xine from RPMs. instead, down load the source from the respective websites, download the win32 codecs and compile your self.
