Yes, I once had to install the same patches to get DNS to work on SUN OS. It was a real nightmare, and was the same NIS problem. I recall the entire nightmare after reading your post (thanks a lot!)
However, there was something in your posts that indicated that DNS was working (based on nslookups you did). Hence, there is still some mystery in the thread

I would like to create an internal webpage for my company that would only be viewable when connected to the VPN or internal network. I want a webpage like newsite.company.com. hey guys, how to add soalris box as a microsoft DNS Client ?

i managed to query from the DNS server after adding /etc/resolve.conf and editing /etc/nsswitch.conf

defaultdomain - file which contains the NIS/YP domain name DESCRIPTION
/etc/defaultdomain is used by the boot scripts to set the NIS/YP domain name for a system as returned by the getdomainname(2) function. The file contains one line with the name of the domain. Unlike DNS hostnames and domain names, the NIS domain name is case-sensitive! The NIS domain name must not be the same as the DNS domain name, but for some services like NIS+ it should be the same.
