Welcome to the forum.

I'm a bit surprised about your problem as sed -d doesn't yield anything but an error message sed: illegal option -- d on the systems I have access to.

Does it have to be sed? How about

EDIT: This sed might work as well:

ls -l | sed 's/\([^ ]* *\)\{4\}\([^ ]* *\)\([^ ]* *\)\{3\}\([^ ]* *\)/\2\4/'
