It is certainly not archiving the contents of /proc. It's important that the dir exists and has the right permissions.
It might archive a tiny, minimal portion of /dev - just basic device files like /dev/console necessary for a system to boot.
Mostly, I think, what's happening is tricking it into building it from the given kernel instead of the running one.

What's the correct way to change the initramfs file that's used during boot?
I know that it's a gzipped cpio archive, but when I gunzip, extract, re-archive (without changing any files), and gzip, then the result is that the system does not boot any more. And I even set the cpio archive type.

Is there a patch available to support initramfs on the 2.4 kernel? We can't upgrade to 2.6 for legacy purposes. All I found on google were early references to how initramfs is better than the 2.4 initrd.

Long story short, I had a ps3 with both Lenny and Sid repositories. Knowing this is a bad idea and that Lenny is being deprecated I decided I wanted to move everything to Sid. sysmsg - system message routing to console devices
SYNOPSIS
/dev/sysmsg
DESCRIPTION
The file /dev/sysmsg routes output to a variable set of console devices. Writes to /dev/sysmsg are always directed to the system console
/dev/console, and are in addition directed to a set of auxiliary console devices managed by consadm(1m).
Only root has permission to write to this device.
