Program to combine two lines in a file on checking the first character of each line

Hi Jim,
I'm new to the Shell scripting. Not sure on how to start. But I tried a piece of code and I'm sure that its completely wrong

for i in '/data/informatica/HQ/APSSR01/SrcFiles/tgt_detail_import.dat| grep -o ^.'
do
case $i in
[0-9]*) var= 1;;
if [$var= 1] then 'sed 'N;s/\n//''
fi

done

Please help me by creating a new program.

I have been searching and trying to come up with an awk that will perform the following on a
converted text file (original is a pdf).
1. Since the first two lines are (begin with) text they are removed

arp2ethers - convert arpwatch address database to ethers file format SYNOPSIS
arp2ethers DESCRIPTION
arp2ethers converts file arp.dat in the current directory into ethers(5) format on stdout. Usually arp.dat is an ethernet/ip database file generated by arpwatch(8). The arpwatch daemon in Debian will create different arp.dat depending on its configuration. All of them will be available at /var/lib/arpwatch/. FILES
