so we can see the characters that are being printed as question marks by ls when output is directed to a terminal. (The quotes around the ls are to avoid any aliases that might be in place.)

cd - change working directory SYNOPSIS

If directory is not specified, the value of shell parameter is used as the new working directory. If directory specifies a complete path starting with or directory becomes the new working directory.
