Assuming you can remove the hard disk and can attach it to another working Windows system, you will save yourself countless hours of work and headache by using a utility like R-Drive Image to carve out the good data. Remember, Linux NTFS support is unreliable.
Yes, you can use efivars to fix up UEFI variables and gdisk to fix up GPT partitions but remember Windows 8 also uses a BCD store. If that is what is damaged you will have to use BCDedit to rebuild or repair it.
Finally, not to be the naysayer, but you can easy brick many current versions of UEFI firmware using efivars or similar tools.

I just built myself a new machine which has an ASUS motherboard with is UEFI based.
I noticed after I installed Fedora 17 that my sda is MBR and my sdb is GPT:
sda is a ssd drive. Should the ssd drive be GPT or is MBR okay?

NAME
ntfsprogs - tools for doing neat things with NTFS
OVERVIEW
ntfsprogs is a suite of NTFS utilities based around a shared library. The tools are available for free and come with full source code.
TOOLS
mkntfs(8) - Create an NTFS filesystem.
ntfscat(8) - Dump a file's content to the standard output.
ntfsclone(8) - Efficiently clone, backup, restore or rescue NTFS.
ntfscluster(8) - Locate the files which use the given sectors or clusters.
ntfscmp(8) - Compare two NTFS filesystems and tell the differences.
ntfscp(8) - Overwrite a file on an NTFS.
ntfsfix(8) - Check and fix some common errors, clear the LogFile and make Windows perform a thorough check next time it boots.
