Zip gives you:
- random access to files
- path preservation
- gzip level compression
- compression picked appropriate to each file
- can be mounted as a r/w file system under FUSE, windows
- can be listed quickly
- can be read to standard out (for a net access app like web cgi).
You could slip a LINUX box in beside it (perhaps using a dedicated full duplex ethernet NIC and back to back cable) and mount more space on cheap PC drives.

I read the sticky and thought of a script I use on a regular basis. Since unless you patch/upgrade the df command on solaris you have a very tought time teling how full the system truly is.

Even though I am not out of inodes or of space, the /var/adm/messages shows messages:
file system full
I am doing now fcsk -m (400G) and I am still waiting to see the fragmentation results (should I add another option to df to have a faster output?)

7-Zip is a file archiver with the highest compression ratio. The program supports 7z (that implements LZMA compression algorithm), LZMA2,
