How tightly does the timing have to be? Scheduler on the PC might call the check script. It probably should report when state changes and periodically (8 hours?) if it is down. Still, this might be easier to set up in a looping script. Write a simple query to embed in the script, have it ask for password as it starts. If the query runs, the output will contain a special string, like "select 102030405+1020304050" and grep -c for 1122334455.

DESCRIPTION
This module provides a DPAP client. DPAP is the Digital Photo Access Protocol and is the protocol that Apple iPhoto uses to share photos.
This allows you to browse shared albums, and download thumbnail and hires versions of shared photos.
It currently doesn't support password-protected shares.
