Reading tokens

I have a String class with a function that reads tokens using a delimiter.

For example

Code:
  String sss = "6:8:12:16";
  nfb = sss.nfields_b (':');
  String tkb1 = sss.get_token_b (':');
  String tkb2 = sss.get_token_b (':');
  String tkb3 = sss.get_token_b (':');
  String tkb4 = sss.get_token_b (':');
  cout << "nfb: " << nf << endl;
  cout << "tkb1:" << tkb1 << endl;
  cout << "tkb2:" << tkb2 << endl;
  cout << "tkb3:" << tkb3 << endl;
  cout << "tkb4:" << tkb4 << endl;

  nfb: 4
  tkb1:6
  tkb2:8
  tkb3:12
  tkb4:16

I want to replace she current code with something simpler

Code:
String
get_token
  (
    String&     a,
    const char  del = ' '
  )

{
  string b = a.STR;
  int firstFound = b.find (del, 0);
  int nextFound = b.find (del, firstFound+1);
  if (nextFound >= 0)
    {
      return (a.substr (firstFound+1, nextFound-firstFound-2));
    }
  else
    {
      return ("");
    }
}

This only gets me the second tag, which is 8. So will need modification. Not sure how much the current code may be simplified.

The current code is below

Code:
String
get_token_b
  (
    String&     a,
    const char  del = ' '
  )

{

  int  b = a.PTR;

  if ( a.PTR == a.SIZE )
    {
      return String("");
    }

  while ( b < a.SIZE && a.STR[b] == del )
    {
      b++;
    }

  int  e = b;

  while ( e < a.SIZE && a.STR[e] != del )
    {
      e++;
    }

  if ( b == a.SIZE )
    {
      return String("");
    }

  a.PTR = e;
  e--;

  return  a.substr_b(b, e);

}
