Also you do not need the -l option and the awk filter:

py_xls2txt - convert an Excel xls file to a plain text file SYNOPSIS
py_xls2txt input-file DESCRIPTION
This manual page was written for the Debian distribution because the original program does not have a manual page. py_xls2txt takes an Excel xls file as an argument and converts it to a plain text file.
