its not with echo , -d etc...
you should read :
Code:
STATUS=`echo ${PARAMS} | cut -d: -f1`

affect to the variable STATUS the the output of:
Code:
echo ${PARAMS} | cut -d: -f1`

which is an echo of another variable piped to cutcmd -with -d: -f1 as argument...
I suggest you look at cut manpages!!
