where the values shown for sites 050100 and 06200 are the max values for the entire set of flows for each site. the number of flow values for each site vary from 10 to over 100.
Given that your sample input does not have any entries for Site Number 062000, does not have any entries with Date 7/1/2001, and does not have any entries with Flow Value 1500, I don't understand how you would expect to get the 2nd line of output shown above.
If the output you wanted from your sample input had been:
you could use something like the following awk script:
Unlike the script provided by ahamed101, the output will be in the same order as the input file. (The for loop used by ahamed101 prints entries from the array in an unspecified order.) The above code prints the max flow value for the previous site number as soon as it finds the first line of the next site number (so it also uses less memory).
If you want to try this script on a Solaris/SunOS operating system, use /usr/xpg4/bin/awk, /usr/xpg6/bin/awk, or nawk instead of the default /usr/bin/awk.

Hi Friends,
I have a file1 with 3400 records that are tab separated and I have a file2 with 6220 records. I want to merge both these files. I tried using join file1 and file2 after sorting. But, the records should be (3400*6220 = 21148000). Instead, I get only around 11133567. Is there anything... (13 Replies)

ucblinks
ucblinks(1B) SunOS/BSD Compatibility Package Commands ucblinks(1B)NAME
ucblinks - adds /dev entries to give SunOS 4.x compatible names to SunOS 5.x devices
SYNOPSIS
/usr/ucb/ucblinks [-e rulebase] [-r rootdir]
DESCRIPTION
ucblinks creates symbolic links under the /dev directory for devices whose SunOS 5.x names differ from their SunOS 4.x names. Where possi-
ble, these symbolic links point to the device's SunOS 5.x name rather than to the actual /devices entry.
ucblinks does not remove unneeded compatibility links; these must be removed by hand.
ucblinks should be called each time the system is reconfiguration-booted, after any new SunOS 5.x links that are needed have been created,
since the reconfiguration may have resulted in more compatibility names being needed.
In releases prior to SunOS 5.4, ucblinks used a nawk rule-base to construct the SunOS 4.x compatible names. ucblinks no longer uses nawk
for the default operation, although nawk rule-bases can still be specifed with the -e option. The nawk rule-base equivalent to the SunOS
5.4 default operation can be found in /usr/ucblib/ucblinks.awk.
OPTIONS -e rulebase Specify rulebase as the file containing nawk(1) pattern-action statements.
-r rootdir Specify rootdir as the directory under which dev and devices will be found, rather than the standard root directory /.
